Eco tech blogger extraordinaire Karl Burkart wrote a wonderful article on our chrome://foxytunes-public/content/signatures/signature-button.pngefforts here at Burn Clean Project, and though we may just have one BIOBUS, and not a “fleet” quite yet, we are certainly working on it! This year we are adding another service under the SHOP tab on BurnCleanProject.org, an easy all-in-one shop providing green supplies for Burning Man, but I guess I should let Karl tell you about that…

Burning Man strives to ‘burn clean’
The ‘Burn Clean’ blog and a new e-commerce site will help Burners to go green.

Burn Clean Project Banner
50,000 people driving hundreds of miles to camp in remote desert and burn TONS of lumber shaped into giant effigies doesn’t exactly sound like the greenest of labor day weekends, but the irony of Burning Man is that it attracts some of the brightest and most environmentally conscious “global citizens” on the planet.

Fortunately one very influential burner chick by the name of Jenn Breckenridge along with a posse of green Burning Man vets took on the daunting task of reconciling this curious cultural disconnect by helping to organize a “greening the man” committee which has since made great strides towards a more eco-friendly Burning Man.

Lamplighters in Black Rock City
From solar powering art installations to implementing a zero waste policy to transporting burners via BIOBUS, a fleet of biodiesel-powered shuttles, Burning Man is going green. Jenn’s own blog Burn Clean Project offers “sustainable energy solutions for Black Rock and beyond” including guidelines and tips on camping, transportation and volunteering.

As of today, the site has also added a first — an online shop called Modern Local for burners to find and purchase green equipment for the upcoming Burning Man. Right now the shop offers only a few carefully selected green products but Jenn has a big vision for its future:

…to source and sell only products designed or made within 150 miles of her home in Venice, CA. By showcasing only the goods masterminded or manufactured within the region, Modern Local will help Los Angeles residents to witness and participate in the enrichment of their hometown, creating a deeper sense of pride and identity for the diverse metropolis in which they live.

Do your green-curious self a favor and check out more of Karl Burkart’s eco tech posts on MNN as well as his very own GreenDig.net, where you can get “real dirt on the environment.”

Burning Man, the annual arts festival that takes place in the remote Black Rock Desert, attracts approximately 40,000 participants, and is Nevada’s tenth largest city, for one week. As a 4th year Burner, I returned to Burning Man after a hiatus of 3 years, with high hopes that Burning Man was finally evolving out of its flamboyant and hedonistic paradigm into a model of eco-conscious social engagement, embodied by its 2007 theme “Green Man.”I must say that, while I had a blast, I was disappointed by the Green-ness of Green Man. But, having arrived at Black Rock Desert in a gas guzzling RV with 4 other friends, I will be the first to admit it ain’t easy making Burning Man Green.

Comparing notes with other eco-conscious Burners, it seemed that the Green element seemed to be somewhat weak.

Green Pavillion

The 30,000 square foot Green Pavilion showcased emerging Green technologies in a manner much like a high school science project, rather than a “World Fair” of clean technologies. Artistic models and interactive displays were explained by billboards that most were too hung-over or ADD in the highly distracting Burning Man environment to read.

StopGlobalWarming.MSN.com: Burning Man 2007 collectively replaced 8,000 gallons of petroleum with biodiesel, not the 40,000 gallons that was projected several months before the burn.

WORLDCHANGING.com: The BIOBUS information they had was outdated. The fare was $55-65 each way and the driver of the bus was Teacher With The Bus, not Biofuels 4 Schools, though that was the original plan.

Greening Man

Annual festival of radical self-expression goes green

By Kate Sheppard
August 28, 2007

Each year, some 40,000 artists, techies, free spirits and innovators descend upon a former lake bed in the Nevada desert for one week, building from nothing a city that will be their home for the week. They’ll eat, sleep, play, build and create here, and after the week is over, vanish back into their everyday lives, leaving not a trace of their city behind. Oh, and they will burn the effigy of a giant man.

But this year at Burning Man, they’re going green — right down to the Man himself.

This year’s theme is “Green,” representing an exploration of mankind’s relationship to nature. From encouraging “burners” to offset their travel, to running the generators on biodiesel, to composting coffee grounds and feeding compost to a 120-foot-long mechanical slug that converts it into fuel, the green theme this year is all-encompassing.

The Green Man

Article PhotoTens of thousands of people are packing up their camping gear, putting the last touches on their art projects and costumes and planning their journeys to the Nevada desert for a week of unmitigated self-expression and revelry. Burning Man has long been the world’s largest Leave No Trace event. While there’s no denying the fundamental unsustainability of erecting a temporary city in the desert for one week each year and then burning much of it to the ground, the culture of the community breeds a deep respect for the desert that temporarily hosts Black Rock City each year.

The art theme of Burning Man 2006 was “The Future: Hope and Fear” and participants pondered what the future might look like to them. 2007 is the year of The Green Man: recognizing our place in the ecosystem and creating a sustainable future.
